Sakura asked:
When the means of preserving unfermented wine did not exist then?
Sendetto…I never implied the reason they drank wine was to get drunk. The reason why I asked is because I saw a few posts down some Christians stated that the wine in the bible was non-alcoholic. Please stick with answering my question.

I don’t know why, haven’t heard of that myself..
If anything it was MORE alcoholic.
Very, very, VERY few Christians say that! And the ones that do are just silly.
Because they have incorporated a no-alcohol policy into their belief set. Wine is wine or it’s grape juice. Christians lie about their religion all the time.
Unca Jerry told them so.
I have never heard anyone say that. Is the wine in church non-alcoholic? I always thought it had alcohol.
More than likely because it states in the bible to stay away from strong drink.
They would be wrong.
They don’t read their own Bibles then
–Moses was denied entry into the promised land because he go drunk
-Seems a tad harsh though.
.After 40 years with that bunch I’d probably get wasted too
Because some of them have not a clue about their own bible nor common sense.
Please do a little more checking and you will find the true. People drank wine because the water was impure not to get drunk
I have pointed this out twice and got multiple thumbs down. So despite the more sensible answers you have already got, there are obviously many people who believe this.
Because they have had their conscience seared and they want to have an excuse to tell themselves that it is ok to drink it. In the Bible days it was not made as it is today.
I asked my mother once what was wrong with drinking. She was very devout in what she believed. She said there is nothing wrong with the drink itself, as it was what it did to the mind, and body, and the things it allowed you to do uninhibited by your conscience.
Because they are simply out of their mind. The bible has a recommendation not to get very drunken, but drinking alcohol has not been said to be forbidden anywhere (even christians pretend so)
In the wedding Jesus turned water into wine. I do not think that he was strongly against alcohol.
When christians notice that something is contradictory, then they try to come with explanation that fits their own values and views. Another good example is: Noah had dinosaurs in his ark
Hah! My pastor spoke about this this morning in Church it definitly had alcohol in it
They have to reconcile their prohibition of alcohol with the clear evidence that wine was accepted in Jesus’ social circle.
Belief is not governed by science.
If you have spent any time on this site, you should know it by now.
If you believe something, like that the use of alcohol is a sin, you will find a verse among the thousands in the Bible that proves it.
It’s a daily occurence here.
People will find a verse that they can interpret in a way to justify anything from wife beating to child ****.
I really think that The Old Teatament enough material that a person can find a verse some where to justify antthing.
I really prefer Jesus and the Word of God in the New Testsment.
i dont know why they would say that….it is perfectly fine to drink wine as long as you dont over indulge. it is ok to have some wine with your supper.
its not ok to just sit and drink to get drunk…and that goes for any alcoholic beverage.
peace to all….”D”
Why would anyone want to believe it was alcoholic?Could it be to justify winos.
There are no contradictions in the word of God.This
being true, why would Jesus turn this wine(mixed with
alcohol)into a drink when he stated that in According to Proverbs 20:1, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” Wine and strong drink turn men into mockers and brawlers. Those who are under their influence scoff at what is holy, reject correction, ridicule the serious. Furthermore, they are “no longer masters of themselves or restrained by the laws of morality or decency”
Wine is the pure fruit of the vine unless otherwise specified, like here is proverbs, it is making reference to change in the wine [fruit].
Pro 23:31,32 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
actually…the christian you will find stating this are those that most likely took some type of ancient history class..along with an anthropology class, where we learn the customs of the times, and one of those customs was in fact to make wine, the only reason they ever actually made wine….as well as cheese, was to have drink and food that they did not have to worry about spoiling. Some of the wine was potent, for times like parties, weddings, etc, but in most cases it was actually more like grape juice, with a kick of course, but not the wine we know today. after all..picture it…it was they’re main source of drink, along with ale….if your in a war, drinking wine or ale from your drink skins..well, doesn’t make for very good outcomes….does it? however, they did need to be sure the drink and food didn’t go bad, so yes..it was fermented, however, kids today could drink it with no worries, for all the fermentation it would have held. now of course, as I said there were more potent wines, not all were so easy on the tongue, but for the most part those were better kept for speical occasions, much like we do today.
can’t remember the name of it now….but just for an example…when I was a little girl, about 6 or 7, I had spent the weekend with a friend and her family on vacation at her grandmas, the grandfater was priest at the local catholic church, and we had to go in early to get the cups and breads ready for communion, and the cups they passed around contained wine….and it was wine..not grape juice, anyway…he gave us a drink of the wine, and well, at the age of 6-7 I don’t know many kids who like wine, but this stuff was good, sweet, tasted like grape juice, I’ve tried to find it over the years, and have never been able to, but I definitely going home and telling my mom about it, and how it didn’t taste like wine at all, wish I could remember what it was.
I don’t know why they say that — wine is wine, and there is absolutely nothing in scripture that would even hint that it was non-alcoholic.
And in various places it discusses wine and drunkenness — clearly indicating that the wine was real wine.

Um, Sunset — the book of Proverbs are NOT the words of Jesus.
Gonnawin: “Fermented” means “alcoholic.”
There are 637 references to wine, drink and drinking in the King James Version of the Bible. Most people think in today’s terms, believing that when wine is mentioned it refers to alcoholic wine. Actually, that is not necessarily true. Thirteen different words are translated “wine” in the King James Version of the Bible. The word wine has a wide range of meaning in the Bible, covering everything from grape juice, to concentrated grape syrup to alcoholic wine.
Old Testament Hebrew Words for Wine
“yayin” — It is a general term for grape beverages and includes all classes of wine, non-alcoholic or alcoholic; unfermented, in the process of fermentation and fermented. (Proverbs 31:4) The context will show whether it is alcoholic wine or not. Yayin, when used properly was always diluted with water.
“shekar” — It is the word for strong drink, unmixed wine. Yakin is wine to be distinguished from Shekar, or strong drink. The former is diluted with water; the later is undiluted.” Shekar was not diluted with water.” (Numbers 28:7)
“Tirosh” — This word refers to fresh grape juice. It is referred to often as new wine or sweet wine. (Proverbs 3:10; Deuteronomy 7:13)
New Testament Greek Words for Wine
“oinos” is the counterpart to the Old Testament word yayin. It is a general term for grape beverages and includes all classes of wine, non-alcoholic or alcoholic; fermented or unfermented. The context has to be used to determine whether the drink was intoxicating or not. (Luke 10:34; Ephesians 5:18). Oinos, when used properly was always diluted with water.
“sikera” is the counterpart to the Old Testament word shekar. It is the word for strong drink, unmixed wine. (Luke 1:15)
“gleukos” is the counterpart to the Old Testament word tirosh. This refers to fresh wine, a new wine or freshly squeezed grape juice.
Distillation was not discovered until about 1500 A.D. Strong drink and unmixed wine in Bible times was from 3% to 11% alcohol. Therefore, since anybody in biblical times who drank unmixed wine (9-11% alcohol) was definitely considered a barbarian, then it is obvious that a Christian should not drink hard liquor at all.
Since wine has 9 to 11% alcohol and one brand 20% alcohol, you should not drink that. Brandy contains 15 to 20% alcohol and hard liquor has 40 to 50% alcohol (80 to 100 proof), and that is obviously excluded.
In Bible times what Christians drank was sub-alcoholic (purified water).
Remember the Hebrew word “yayin” and the Greek word “oinos”. These were the companion words for wine whether fermented or unfermented. In fact, whether fermented or not, it was mixed with water.
All alcoholic beverages used in our culture fall under the biblical classification of strong drink and are therefore forbidden. The least ratio of water to wine mixture used in Bible times was 3 parts water to 1 wine. That produced a sub-alcoholic drink that was 2.5% to 2.75% alcohol. Normally, the ratio was even higher, up to 20 to 1. There is no Biblical support for a Christian to drink alcoholic beverages today. What early believers drank was sub-alcoholic by today’s standards. Pastors and deacons were cautioned to steer around even the sub-alcoholic stuff (I Timothy 3:3 & 8).
Hope this helps.
