How would you quote the Bible?

wine in the bible
Megan asked:

Coming from an agnostic family I do not know how to quote the bible. For example “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” Proverbs 20:1. Do i say 21 or 20 to 1? How is this said?

You would say Proverbs, chapter 20, verse 1

Either “Proverbs twenty {pause} one” or (more stuffily) “Proverbs [chapter] twenty verse one.”

It would be one of two ways. You can say Chapter 20, verse 1, or you can simply say 20 1. For example, John 3:16, you can say, “John chapter 3, verse 16″ or just read it as is — John 3 16.

If there are other numbers like John 3:16-19, then it implies that it is more than one verse. This is said, chapter 3, verses 16 to 19. or John 3 16 through 19.

Proverbs chapter 20, verse 1

or Proverbs 20 verse 1

You could simply say Proverbs twenty, one. But that would sound the same as Proverbs twenty-one, which might cause someone hearing you to think that you were referring to part of the 21st chapter of Proverbs.

“Once upon a time…”

Paraphrasing the bible is good enough for me. The original text isn’t always that clear anyway.

I would say “Proverbs chapter 20, verse 1″ –
I would write “Proverbs 20:1″

And

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” [ 2 Timothy 3:16 ]

May God bless you as you study His Word

Proverbs 20 verse one, or Proverbs chapter 20 verse one. You might also want to mention which version you are quoting from, I can’t seem to place a version that mentions beer.
